I'm sorry for asking so many questions, but have you ever considered a tail that doesn't bend so easily at the knees? I realize many of your poses would not be so easy anymore, but wouldn't the look even be more realistic?

...You really just asked that of a professional mermaid.  Wow, that was... gutsy, or ignorant.

Humans are nowhere near as efficient at moving themselves through seawater compared to any other mammal of equivalent size- sea lion, sea otter, seal, some small dolphins.  And while the debate about whether mermaids are mammals -or-not rages on, one thing is pretty clear about this aquatic deficiency : the human knee is what is causing the problem.
The way we bend our legs may be in the same direction as the above critters, but our straight thighs disrupt the water slipstream as they bend downwards, and our ankles/feet are incapable of neither bending nor taking the kinds of stresses a pair of fins would place on them for maximum propulsion.

Rather than a three-joint system (hips, knees, ankles) for a tail, it is far more likely that a 'real' mermaid would have an extended spinal structure, just like seals and dolphins do!  That way, the water is not disrupted as easily when the tail articulated up and down (and you can put as many decorative fins and flukes on there as you want to), but can also twist and bend for far-greater agility and speed.
(Note: whether the tailfins have bone-like structures or cartilage in them is still up for debate and personal interpretation; I do not bother fighting this.)

No offense intended towards any professional mermaids who [may] read this, but if you want to see an example of a mermaid with [in my opinion] a 'realistic' tail articulation, watch how :iconarielplz: swims in Disney's movie, "The Little Mermaid".  The WDP artists specifically based their merfolk tail shapes and motions off of seals and sea otters, and you can easily pick out the difference (even if they are 2-D drawings).
There are other examples of animated mermaids with multi-segmented tails/extended spines rather than legs, but Ariel is by far  the most prominent, best-known and easily-accessible example.

Just... don't try to take the whole "mermaids without knees"-thing with professional mermaids and cosplayers, because you will always come out of it looking like the insensitive, inconsiderate and rude one.  Always.

Thanks for your reply, to answer your first comment, I was just ignorant, had no clue this was a hot or difficult topic. I just have an unexplainable love for mermaids and have no intention to get on anyone's wrong side.

I'm assuming it was Raina who answered my comment and she was very patient and detailed in her reply. I learned a lot from her website, becoming slightly less ignorant :-)

I appreciate your comment too, the technical or biological aspect makes sense.

Either way, with or without knees, my love for mermaids will always remain!
